Fresh pasta

I called a friend on a whim as I was driving near her house to see if she might want to eat falafel with me in her driveway. Sounds great, she said, but I'm already making pasta. How does that sound?

Pretty delicious, actually. Tasted pretty delicious, too. She'd made pesto the night before, so my heaping pile of spaghetti was topped with fresh pesto and a generous helping of parmesan. And she sent me home with peppermint bark, on top of that.

An excellent detour, and nice to have a tiny bit of spontaneity when it's so hard to these days.

Surprise!

Somehow, I skipped all of November. Oops!

Today, I'm excited that a friend dropped off a surprise - a tote bag she decorated and some baked goods inside. I'll be having muffins for breakfast the next few days, and that sounds delicious. And the bag is lovely.

Fortunes

I love fortune telling in all its various forms. So I was thrilled yesterday when a box showed up on my door and it was a kit from a friend teaching me how to read tea leaves.

There's a mug and some loose leaf and instructions about how the whole thing works. But the best part is the list of symbols - what everything means.

I can't wait to practice it.

Pool

I participate in an annual pool with a group of friends, acquaintances and strangers. And today I learned I'm tied for first! It goes until the end of the year, so there's plenty of time for others to pass me. But for now, it was nice.

And I have several friends who are interested in the standings, so it gave me an excuse to reach out and check in.

Muscadines

Muscadines have been growing on me the past few weeks.

Traditionally, I have liked the word more than the fruit. But my CSA had some good ones, and a friend shared some that she picked.

She handed them over in a box she made and her daughter decorated, and it was super exciting to see how thrilled she was to hand them off.

Plus, I'm getting used to them. They're no concord grapes, but they're not half bad.

This weekend

I watched a movie outside, picked some apples, sat around a fire and talked with friends. If not for the masks and the distance, it might have felt like any other October. It wasn't ideal -- after all, there's still a pandemic -- but it was something.

Gifts

I put something in the mail today, and it's nice to know that there's a surprise floating around out there that will hopefully make someone's day a little better.

So awesome

Video of a friend reacting to a birthday surprise I helped orchestrate, and seeing how excited it made her.

Nicknames

The book I started last night begins with a character calling her best friend by a series of nicknames -- ZanaBanana, Prescription Xanax, Alexander Zamilton. Zanny Boy. The Zan names go on.

While we do it less frequently now, a friend and I used to start and end every email correspondence with what I will call the incorporative nickname. I would sometimes delay responses while I looked for the perfect fit, and I'd stash away good ones when I came across them. So the fact that these were on Page 1 was a good open for this book, (from the box of books!), which I enjoyed.

Also, in the reviews, there was a comment thread about how someone almost burned down a house after trying to dry a shirt in the oven, and that made me laugh, too.

Here, kitty, kitty

I visited a friend on her porch last night, and was surprised when a cat greeted me as I pulled into the driveway. She's always been a dog person, but it had been six months, and maybe she'd added a pet.

The cat was friendly and followed me into the backyard. It hung around after I slipped and fell in the mud. (That's a different story, but it's been so long since I fell in the mud! There was something weirdly nice about that, too!) And it walked up the stairs with me to the porch.

It did not belong to my friend.

But for the whole two and a half hours I was there, it made itself at home. It leaped on the chairs, the table, each of us. It challenged her dog, who had come to the door to see what was happening. It strutted along railings and went after some bugs. It was the most self-assured cat I've ever seen.

And when it was time for me to leave, the cat followed down the stairs. I had to lure it out the gate. It scampered among the rosemary as I picked some on my way out. My friend joked that it was going to follow me in to my car, but I made a (mud-covered) run for it. The cat was nonchalant, and meandered away, to the next house.

I'm not an animal person at all, but it was really sweet and soft and friendly. If it had jumped in the car after me, I would have been hard-pressed to kick it out.

Box o' books

A friend told me to look out for a package Monday, so I was super excited when there was something in the mailbox Saturday. (It was my office, sending a plastic doohickey for pressing buttons. Perhaps useful, but not the package I was waiting for.)

Yesterday, there it was: a box of books! Three of them! All sweet-looking YA, with a lovely note.

It was so kind and thoughtful and I can't wait to dig in.

Scavenger hunt

As part of a friend's birthday celebration, I was a clue in a scavenger hunt (and directed him to another person who would direct him to another who would, eventually, lead him to a birthday present).

I thought it was such a neat idea and the long text conversation was so nice to have.

Book exchange

I've been in the same book club for nearly a decade, and one of the highlights is the twice-annual white elephant book exchange where people steal and steal and steal books and it takes forever to know what you're going home with.

That's hard in a pandemic.

While we've been able to keep having meetings on Zoom, the exchange was a different story. But tonight, we figured it out! And so if all goes to plan, I should be getting a book in the mail in the not-too-distant future.

That's pretty wonderful, as are the successes in normalcy, such as it is now.

Ring ring

How nice to get phone calls today from two friends I've known since I was in the single digits. Fourth grade was a good grade, even all these years later.

Mail

I haven't checked the mail (or, uh, been outside) since the weekend, so I thought it would be nice to take a quick jaunt to the mailbox. (It turns out it's hot as blazes out there -- even after 10 p.m.) It was heartening that my one piece of mail -- just one! -- was a handwritten letter. I'm glad I went to look.

But now I can probably give it a few days again.

Berries

I went to pick blueberries today, on purpose, and found some wild blackberries later in the day on a walk in the woods.

I always love finding them -- they feel like a secret discovery! -- and while most weren't ripe, I managed to snag a couple that were edible.

It made it feel like summer. That plus melting outdoors.

A warm drink

Hot chocolate at night, spiked with the last of the cream bourbon.
