Apple crisp

I can smell it cooling from the other room, and it smells delicious.

Humans

You know what's nice? Relationships with people.

I had two work-related incidents today that reminded me of that. One with someone I haven't talked to in several months, who remembered something about me I'm not sure I knew she knew. Another with a coworker who took time to answer a question that wasn't at all related to work, where he could have just blown me off.

It made me happy on both counts that the relationships existed and were more than surface-level in those ways that mattered today.

Baking

Is this a cake with shrimp and mushrooms? Because it sure looks like a cake with shrimp and mushrooms.

My baking has not yet gotten that weird, but I'm glad there's room to grow.

Gifts

I put something in the mail today, and it's nice to know that there's a surprise floating around out there that will hopefully make someone's day a little better.

So awesome

Video of a friend reacting to a birthday surprise I helped orchestrate, and seeing how excited it made her.

Smores

I was in the woods this weekend, and built a fire with the help of Tostitos (who knew they were good kindling? The internet did!). A fire naturally requires smores. And having not gotten my fill, I made some over the stove this afternoon, too.

Discussing important topics this afternoon with a handful of people, thoughtfully.

Writing

Sometimes your brain does things that you don't know it's doing, but they just work. That's what happened with a story I wrote yesterday, where the kicker was accidentally perfect.

I had no idea - I wrote it quickly then moved on to other things - but got two texts about it this morning. I went back to look. It worked so very well.

Thanks, brain. (It's also why I'm suspect of literary criticism. But maybe I'm the only one who accidentally writes that way.)

Lunch

Was a tomato sandwich, with a tomato that I grew on foccacia that I baked.

And it was divine.

Road names

I have always been fascinated by the naming of roads. One of my life goals is to name them within a neighborhood. (Urban planner friends, help me out here!)

So today I was delighted by a street sign I saw while driving in north Georgia. The road was called Apple Ridge 2.

That's right - 2! Right there on the sign! Like, yeah, we know there's another one... but this was our destiny!

I googled it when I got home, just to make sure my eyes didn't deceive me. Nope. Dawsonville, Georgia. It's there.

Notes

I sent notes to a couple co-workers today for things they did that I appreciated. Hopefully it made them smile! One replied noting that we had just passed the 26-week mark since we'd been sent home. It's a wacky thing.

Apple cider

I had my first glass of the season today. It's just divine.

Vows

I got to watch a friend's wedding on Zoom this weekend. I wish I could have been there in person, of course. But it was so nice to see the ceremony online.

They referenced wizards and Hedwig's Origin of Love in their vows, and it was so damn sweet.

Nicknames

The book I started last night begins with a character calling her best friend by a series of nicknames -- ZanaBanana, Prescription Xanax, Alexander Zamilton. Zanny Boy. The Zan names go on.

While we do it less frequently now, a friend and I used to start and end every email correspondence with what I will call the incorporative nickname. I would sometimes delay responses while I looked for the perfect fit, and I'd stash away good ones when I came across them. So the fact that these were on Page 1 was a good open for this book, (from the box of books!), which I enjoyed.

Also, in the reviews, there was a comment thread about how someone almost burned down a house after trying to dry a shirt in the oven, and that made me laugh, too.

Here, kitty, kitty

I visited a friend on her porch last night, and was surprised when a cat greeted me as I pulled into the driveway. She's always been a dog person, but it had been six months, and maybe she'd added a pet.

The cat was friendly and followed me into the backyard. It hung around after I slipped and fell in the mud. (That's a different story, but it's been so long since I fell in the mud! There was something weirdly nice about that, too!) And it walked up the stairs with me to the porch.

It did not belong to my friend.

But for the whole two and a half hours I was there, it made itself at home. It leaped on the chairs, the table, each of us. It challenged her dog, who had come to the door to see what was happening. It strutted along railings and went after some bugs. It was the most self-assured cat I've ever seen.

And when it was time for me to leave, the cat followed down the stairs. I had to lure it out the gate. It scampered among the rosemary as I picked some on my way out. My friend joked that it was going to follow me in to my car, but I made a (mud-covered) run for it. The cat was nonchalant, and meandered away, to the next house.

I'm not an animal person at all, but it was really sweet and soft and friendly. If it had jumped in the car after me, I would have been hard-pressed to kick it out.

Surprise

I got to be on the phone with someone I sent something to as it arrived at the front door -- and the confused reaction to the knock, followed by being able to tell them what it was they were being surprised with was really great. (It was ice cream! We should all be surprised with ice cream. As long as there's someone home to get it!)

It's nice

When you hear back from people quickly.

And when people reach out with things you should know.

And when they answer your questions when you ask them.

Box o' books

A friend told me to look out for a package Monday, so I was super excited when there was something in the mailbox Saturday. (It was my office, sending a plastic doohickey for pressing buttons. Perhaps useful, but not the package I was waiting for.)

Yesterday, there it was: a box of books! Three of them! All sweet-looking YA, with a lovely note.

It was so kind and thoughtful and I can't wait to dig in.
